“1,100 children taking anti-retroviral therapy”

Campaign on HIV/AIDS organised

Tuticorin: An advocacy campaign on HIV/AIDS was organised by the Tuticorin District HIV Positive People Welfare Society, a non-governmental group comprising people having HIV/AIDS, here on Friday.

G. Palanisamy, president of the society, said that number of people undergoing anti-retroviral therapy (ART) in the State had gone up from 7,000 to 20,000 over the last four years.

“Correspondingly, the number of ART centres went up to 19 from seven in the last three years.”

According to Mr. Palanisamy, about 400 children have undergone ART in two years ending on November, 2006.

“Presently, 1,100 children are taking ART in the State.”

R. Kamaraj, district programme manager, Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society, spoke.
