Scheme for new mothers launched

Special Correspondent

The programme will cover pregnant women from the below poverty line category

‘Madilu’ will encourage women to undergo delivery in public healthcare institutions

Kit containing material for three months after the delivery will be provided

BANGALORE: The State Government’s “Madilu” programme aimed at encouraging women to undergo institutional delivery in public healthcare institutions was launched here on Friday.

Minister for Health and Family Welfare launched the scheme and said that under the scheme a medical kit containing all material required for a mother and child for three months after the delivery would be provided. The kit contains materials such as mosquito net, soap, lotion, bed-sheet, towel, rubber sheet and other materials required for hygiene maintenance of the mother and child. The scheme would cover pregnant women belonging to the below poverty line. The scheme came into operational from August 15, 2007. The cost of each kit is Rs. 825. The scheme is applicable for only two children, he said.

Nearly 10 lakh deliveries take place in the State a year. About seven lakh pregnant women belonging to BPL families give birth. The percentage of institutional deliveries was very less. The department had set a target for institutional deliveries at 90 per cent by 2010. About 50 infants per a thousand died before one year, the Minister said.

The Department was planning to provide cash of Rs. 500 a month for mothers in the first four months after the delivery to discourage them from doing manual labour. The scheme would be applicable only for mothers belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories, Mr. Ashok said.

State Women’s Commission Chairperson Pramila Nesargi was present at the launch of the programme.
