Whither CBI?

Shibu Soren’s acquittal by the Delhi High Court in the murder of his private secretary has once again put a question mark on the CBI’s credibility, especially in matters involving those in the ruling dispensation. Only a few days ago, it failed miserably in its attempt to get Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrochhi extradited to India from Argentina in the Bofors case. Such goof-ups in high-profile cases by the premier investigating agency have dented its image and reinforced the belief that it remains a puppet in the hands of the government of the day.

Mr. Soren’s acquittal is a poor reflection on the CBI’s efficiency. Overload of cases, official interference, lack of motivation and incentives are the plausible reasons for such failure.
