Senior police officer suspended
Special Correspondent
BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa Government on Friday placed senior IPS officer B.B. Mahanti under suspension after the officer’s arrest became almost certain following the delivery of a non-bailable warrant issued against him by a Rajasthan court to the Cuttack police.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik passed orders for Mr. Mahanti’s suspension as the Cuttack police started searching for him to execute the arrest warrant against the police officer.
Mr. Mahanti, however, was not traceable till late in the evening.
Son absconding
The arrest warrant against Mr. Mahanti was issued in a case registered against him for helping his son Bitihotra Mohanty jump parole.
Bitihotra had jumped parole while undergoing a jail term after he was convicted for raping a German tourist in Rajasthan’s Alwar town. He is since absconding.
Meanwhile, top officials of Orissa government’s Home Department said that necessary steps would be taken to execute the arrest warrant against the senior police officer.
