Tiruchi, Vellore in semifinals

TIRUCHI: A. Vignesh Naga’s half-century and M.R. Muthupandi’s four-wicket haul helped Tiruchi defeat Nagapattinam by six wickets and enter the semifinals of the TNCA under-22 inter-district cricket tournament here on Friday.

The scores: Quarterfinals: At Tiruchi: Nagapattinam 137 in 34.3 overs (G. Satish Kumar 32, M.R. Muthupandi four for 36) lost to Tiruchi 138 for four in 30.2 overs (A. Vignesh Naga 50, E.M. Jose Mithun 33).

At Tirunelveli: Salem 172 in 46.3 overs (P. Balachandar 41, R. Karthik three for 21, Jaiganesh three for 49) lost to Kancheepuram 173 for five in 31.5 overs (Aswin Kumar 56, Vijay Baharth Ram 50)

At Dindgual: Vellore 235 for nine in 50 overs (C. Babu 50, Manivannan 28, S.R. Karthikeyan four for 39) vs. Coimbatore 87 for three in 20 overs. Rain stopped play, Vellore was declared winner on spin of coin.

Yazhini triumphs

Jerusha Yazhini, L. Ramya and K.G. Raji won individual titles in the under-19, 17 and 14 age-categories at the KVS regional-level athletic meet for girls on Friday.

Cadet fencing

The fifth state cadet fencing championship would be held at the Selvam Arts and Science College, Namakkal, on August 25 and 26. Over 300 participants from 25 districts are expected to take part. The performance in the championship will be the basis for selection of the state squad for the national championship scheduled in Gwalior from September 6 to 9.

SRTS-I wins title

Southern Region Transmission System (SRTS)- I, with 14.5 points, at the end of the fourth and final round, won the team title at the Power Grid inter-regional chess tournament here on Friday. Host SRTS-II finished second with 9.5 points.

The results (fourth and final round): SRTS-I (14.5) bt ERTS- II (7.5); SRTS-II (9.5) bt NERTS (7.5); WRTS-II (8.5) bt WRTS-I (6.5); Corporate Centre (New Delhi) (8) bt NRTS-I (5.5); ERTS-I (6.5) bt NRTS-II (6).

Easy for Kurunji

Kurinji College of Arts and Science defeated Paventhar Bharathidasan College of Arts and Science by nine-wickets and entered the pre-quarterfinals of the Bharathidasan University inter-collegiate (Tiruchi zone) cricket tournament on Friday.
