Basava Award for Kalam

BANGALORE: The State Government has selected the former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam for this year’s (2006-07) Basava Award in recognition of his services to the country.

The award comprising Rs. 10 lakh, a momento and a citation will be presented to Dr. Kalam at a function to be held at the Jnana Jyothi auditorium here on September 28, Minister for Kannada and Culture H.S. Mahadeva Prasad told presspersons here on Friday.

Mr. Prasad said that he called on Dr. Kalam recently with a letter of communication on his being chosen for the prestigious award, and the former President had accepted it. The Government had decided to confer the annual award at the national level hereafter to those who had worked for promotion of philosophy of the 12th century social reformer Basaveshwara, he said.

Dr. Kalam had appreciated Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy’s village stays. The former President had also studied Basaveshwara’s philosophy with keen interest. The State Government has been conferring the award since 2001. The purse for the award has been increased from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh from this year.
