The metro rail in operation in New Delhi.
CHENNAI: The detailed project report for the proposed metro rail project in the city is likely to be submitted to the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) by the end of next week. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited, which is working on the report, is expected to suggest minor modifications to the original alignment. The rail corridor has been proposed along EVR Periyar Salai (Poonamallee High Road) and Anna Salai. The partly-elevated and partly-underground railway line along Anna Salai and Poonamallee High Road is estimated to cost Rs. 7,129 crore, according to a project profile drafted last year. As per the plan, work on the project is scheduled to begin in January 2008 and go on for six years. Initial project reports said the first corridor from Toll Gate to Kamaraj Airport would cover 27.3 km with 22 stations and the second corridor would run from Fort Station to Guindy with 18 stations covering 21.8 km. Much of the elevated track was proposed along Anna Salai. Passages to connect the suburban railway lines to the metro rail corridors were also proposed. Three pedestrian subway projects had been put on hold, as the alignment of the corridor was not finalised. Chennai is in the list of cities with a population of three million and above, where the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited had recommended metro rail project to the Planning Commission. While Delhi and Kolkata already have metro rail, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Hyderabad and Bangalore would get the facility.
