Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The Congress on Friday decided to have a dialogue with the Left parties early next week, probably on Monday or Tuesday, to break the impasse over the nuclear deal with the U.S.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s core group at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s residence.
Dr. Singh, United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Defence Minister A. K. Antony and Ahmed Patel, political secretary to the Congress president, were present at the discussions.
Earlier in the day, Ms. Gandhi returned from South Africa and was briefed by Mr. Mukherjee on the developments.
Later, he briefed the core group on the meetings, including the one on Friday morning, he had with CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and MP Sitaram Yechury.
