HYDERABAD: Former Kerala Chief Minister Oomen Chandy has asked the CPI (M) leadership to shed its ‘double standards in politics’ in the interest of the poor.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Mr. Chandy who was here on an invitation of Kerala associations, alleged that these double standards were evident from their inconsistent reactions to the violence in Nandigram in West Bengal and the police firing in Mudigonda in Khammam district. The CPI (M) would speak something while in power and another thing when in the Opposition.

Mr. Chandy said the CPI (M) leadership dubbed as ‘naxalites the ordinary peasants who were killed in police firing in Nandigram while it gave a different interpretation to the firing in Mudigonda. The Congress Government had adopted a humanitarian approach in sanctioning Rs. 6 lakh as compensation and other benefits including two acres of land to the victims’ families.

Similarly when the Congress tried to raise funds in Kerala for the Nandigram victims, they were criticised.

The Congress leader said the Left Government in Kerala was reversing the process of land reforms and was rendering small farmers into landless peasants now. Citing the example of the A1 block in Aleppey district where the poor were given 154 acres of land earlier, he said the Government had taken away the land now.
