Tiruchi Bureau
TIRUCHI: The Southern Railway has conceded the demand of the commuters of central districts by introducing a new daily express train between Tiruchi and Mayiladuturai. The Mayiladuturai–Tiruchi Express will be flagged off by the Union Minister for Panchayati Raj, Mani Shankar Aiyar, in the presence of the Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, at a function scheduled at Mayiladuturai Junction on Saturday. Covering a distance of 120 km between both the destinations, the express train will stop at Thanjavur, Papanasam and Kumbakonam stations. At present, the Southern Railway is operating the Mayiladuturai-Mysore Express, Mayiladuturai-Tirunelveli Passenger and two passenger services between Tiruchi and Mayiladuturai ever since the newly laid track between Mayiladuturai and Kumbakonam was commissioned in mid June last year. The operation of limited services in the new section prompted the travellers of Thanjavur and Nagapattinam districts, besides those from Tiruchi, to urge the railway administration to introduce more services. The operation of this train was announced by the Union Railway Minister Lalu Yadav in the Railway Budget presented in February this year and the timings have already found a place in the Railway Time Table. Train No. 6233 Mayiladuturai–Tiruchi Express will leave Mayiladuturai Junction at 8 a.m.; Kumbakonam at 8.42 a.m.; Papanasam at 8.55 a.m.; Thanjavur at 9.30 a.m. and reach Tiruchi Junction at 10.45 a.m. In the return direction, Train No. 6234 will leave Tiruchi Junction at 1.05 p.m.; Thanjavur at 1.55 p.m., Papanasam at 2.21 p.m., Kumbakonam at 2.45 p.m. and reach Mayiladuturai Junction at 3.45 p.m. Meanwhile, the people of Tiruchi have urged the Railways to consider the extension of this new train to Madurai. The Railways should extend this train to Madurai and this move will immensely benefit the people of the southern districts too. This will not be a difficult task, given the timings of the new train,” observed the convener of the Federation of Service Organisations, Tiruchi, M. Sekaran.
