Staff Reporter

Festivities planned at six other tourist centres

Thiruvananthapuram: The Akkulam tourist village in the suburb and six other tourist spots in the district have been decked with lights for the Onam celebrations being organised by the Thiruvananthapuram District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) with public participation and assistance of local bodies.

In addition to Akkulam, the DTPC will directly organise the festivities at Neyyar Dam and Varkala. The celebrations at Aruvikkara, Kovalam, Thiruvallam and Pulimutil Kadavu have been organised with the support of the respective local bodies.

Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar will inaugurate the festivities at Akkulam on Sunday. Cultural programmes and competitions have been organised for women and children.

DTPC Secretary N. Subramoniam told The Hindu that the Government provided Rs.50,000 for the festivities. The rest of the Rs.3 lakh needed to organise the festivities at Akkulam will be collected through sponsorships.

The road from Kottamukku to the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) will be lit up by the CESS and the remaining stretch by the DTPC.

The DTPC has spruced up the tourist village for the four-day festivities. The snag in the theatre of the musical fountain has been rectified. New Malayalam, Hindi and Tamil songs have been included. The filtering plant of the swimming pool has been overhauled. The artificial waterfalls in the village will be switched on using generator during the festivities. The children’s park has been renovated as hundreds of children are expected to visit the village.

The authorities have also overhauled the boats and have, to some extent, removed the water hyacinths to make way for the boat services. The KSRTC will operate additional bus services to the tourist village.
