Priest’s mother falls prey to tricksters Crime notes

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Two men on Friday cheated the priest of Muneshwara Temple on Palace Road, near Carlton House, and made away with gold jewellery worth Rs. 1 lakh belonging to his mother.

According to the police, as it was Varamahalakshmi festival, several people had thronged the temple for puja. Around 9.30 a.m., two men offered two Rs. 500 notes to the priest, Narayanappa, and asked him to keep one for himself and give back the other after placing it in front of the deity.

They told the priest that they needed the blessings of an elderly woman as they were starting a new business. They asked Mr. Narayanappa, whose house is next to the temple, if there were any elderly women at his house. Mr. Narayanappa told the two persons that his mother was at home, and the duo asked him to take them to her.

The two made Mr. Narayanappa’s mother, Kamakshamma, touch the Rs. 500 note with her gold ornaments. Later, they made her remove the ornaments and put them in a box. When Mr. Narayanappa went inside a room, the two made away with the box, High Grounds inspector Lokeshwara told The Hindu.

Mr. Lokeshwara denied reports that the conmen also made away with the jewellery from the temple. On a complaint by Mr. Narayanappa, the High Grounds police have registered a case.
