Some 23 colleges are affiliated to the university Panel to assess infrastructure and activities
BHUBANESWAR: In a bid to bring in a qualitative improvement in the academic affairs of the colleges affiliated to it, Utkal University of Culture (UUC), country’s first institution of its kind, has clamped stringent conditions on the colleges. It has resolved to withdraw recognition of Dhauli College of Art and Crafts and Indian Institute of Hotel and Catering for their failure to meet the government and UGC guidelines. Culture Minister S.N. Patro, who chaired a high-level committee meeting that reviewed the University’s activities at the state Secretariat here on Friday, told media persons that 23 colleges of the State were accorded affiliation to the university. The colleges are offering post graduate programmes in social work and tourism and hospitality service while graduate programmes are being provided in interior designing, textiles designing and tourism in self-financing mode. A college has to ensure that it has its own building within seven years of availing affiliation to the university. The two colleges from which recognition would be withdrawn have failed to meet the deadline, Mr. Patro said. The Minister further maintained that the colleges affiliated or seeking affiliation to the university are also required to appoint at least a professor, one reader and three lecturers in the scale of pay as laid down by the University Grants Commission. The college authorities have to pay the salary to the faculty through cheques too, he pointed out and explained that payment through banks would curb the corrupt practice of making less payment to the employees. The university had constituted a committee to make an on-the-spot assessment of the infrastructure and activities of the affiliated colleges, the Minister said. He also revealed that stringent measures will be taken up against the violators of the government and UGC guidelines.
