BHUBANESWAR: The State Culture Department has directed the State Archaeology Department to hand over 13 statues dating back to between the 9th and 13th century which were kept in its custody at the Jayadev Museum at Kenduli village along with the staff to the Orissa State Museum. However, the Orissa Ancient Monument Protection Act of 1956 states that no development activity can be taken up on a heritage site owned by the State Archaeology Department without its permission. In a letter the culture department has stated that the decision to hand over the statues to State Museum was taken at a committee meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary. Ironically, the Chief Secretary happens to be founder-member of the Jayadev Foundation that has been campaigning in favour of Kenduli as the birth place of the 12th century saint poet Jayadev who was earlier claimed to be born in Bengal. A number of developmental activities are being taken up for Kenduli after the senior bureaucrat took over as the Chief Secretary.
