Bringing people closer to the police

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Suvarna Varsham, an “exhibition extravaganza” organised by the police to mark 50th anniversary of the Kerala Police, turned out to be a success.

“This was part of the community policing and effort to reach out to the public. We also attempted to showcase various aspects of the Police Department and arrange awareness classes on subjects like drug abuse,” said Manoj Abraham, City Police Commissioner.

“Not all exhibitions will have this much of information about the police force. This, probably, was the greatest attraction for the public,” said Mr. Abraham.

The exhibition, according to figures available, witnessed a footfall of 1.60 lakh, since the show was inaugurated on August 20. More than 35 types of uniforms worn by policemen during different periods, starting from the era of erstwhile Travancore, was a key attraction at the exhibition.

Also on display were police weapons, equipment for riot control, scientific aids to investigation, police telecommunications, cyber crime and various wings of the police like Hi-Tech Cell, Tourism Police, Highway Police and Traffic Police.

Actor Suresh Gopi will be present for the formal closing of the exhibition on Sunday. Additional Director-General of Police V.R. Rajeevan will preside over the function to be held at the Marine Drive grounds.

Inspector-General of Police, Ernakulam Range, Vinson M. Paul, Mr. Manoj Abraham, chairman of Gold Souk Surendar Gupta and representatives of the Kerala Builders Forum, Kerala Builders Association and the Ernakulam District Residents Associations Apex Council will be present.

The valedictory session will be marked by floral release by naval helicopter and demonstration by the Naval Diving Unit.

Mr. Gupta will hand over the award for eminent work in community policing by the Kochi City Police.

Special investigative skill awards will also be given to officers involved in the detection of murder of senior High Court advocate M.P. Abraham.

Gazal concert by Anup Jalota will add colour to the ceremony. With fireworks lighting up the sky at Marine Drive, curtains will fall on the exhibition.
