PUDUCHERRY: Yoganjali Natyalayam presented “Karna Charitram”, a Bharatanatyam dance drama, as part of the centenary celebrations of Swami Gitananda Giri recently. Around 60 students of the dance school presented the story of Karna, the unsung hero of the epic Mahabharatha. The role of Karna was played by 12-year-old S. Ghayathri, Arjuna by Shreya Agrawal, that of Lord Krishna by I. Krishnaveni and Kunthi by Devasena Bhavanani. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani said Swami Gitananda Giri, the founder of Yoganjali Natyalayam and the madathipathi of Sri Kambliswamy Madam, was born in 1907. The centenary celebrations began in July. Director of Yoganjali Natyalaya, Meenakshi Devi Bhavanani, who has directed the dance drama, said Karna was the personification of the predicament of every human being — ignorance of one’s own true identity. She also said Karna was the epitome of rare qualities like generosity, loyalty, fidelity, heroism and yogic skill in action. Lyrics and commentary in Tamil for the dance drama were by Pulavar I. Pattabhiraman. The Bharata Nritya Kala Shironmani award by Yoga Jivana Satsanga (International) was presented to eminent dancer Padma Subramanyam. Rajsri Vasudevan, a philosophy lecturer at MGR Janaki College, Chennai, and a disciple of Dr. Padma, received the award on her behalf.
