BPL list to be released shortly

REVIEW: Minister for Tourism and Local Administration Malladi Krishna Rao presiding over a review meeting on the implementation of the Central Government schemes in Puducherry on Saturday.

PUDUCHERRY: The Government has decided to release the list of below the poverty line (BPL) families so that the Union Territory received Central Government’s assistance for poverty alleviation programmes.

Official sources told The Hindu on Saturday that the decision to release the list was taken at a meeting of the Vigilance and Monitoring Committee.

Among others, legislators and Government officials, including heads of departments concerned, participated in the meeting chaired by Minister for Tourism and Local Administration Malladi Krishna Rao.

The meeting took stock of the ongoing Centrally-sponsored schemes such as Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY), Swarnajayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana, Indira Awaz Yojana and Total Sanitation Campaign in the Union Territory, the sources said. According to them, the meeting also discussed issues related to expediting the implementation of projects under the SGRY by releasing adequate funds to the Panchayat Raj institutions.

It had been pointed out at the meeting that non-allocation of funds by the Centre this year for the SGRY projects had created some anxiety.

“The Government of India has made it clear that funds will not be released for these projects unless the BPL list is published. So, we have decided to release the list in two or three weeks,” the sources said.

The local Member of Parliament had also been briefed about the state of implementation of the Centrally-funded projects with a view to enabling him to take it up with the Union Ministers concerned, they added. Puducherry MP and Member of the Public Accounts Committee, M. Ramadoss said the meeting reviewed the implementation of the Central Government schemes, with particular reference to utilisation of funds earmarked last year.
