KASARAGOD: Kerala Government Contractors Association has said that the statement of Finance Minister Thomas Isaac that a sum of Rs.507 crore had been disbursed to PWD contractors as charges for road work in the current financial year was ambiguous. State president of the association Vargheese Kannambilly said at a press conference here on Saturday that the State Government had disbursed Rs.239 crore only in the current financial year to the PWD contractors towards charges for road works already executed. Mr. Kannambilly noted that the Government was yet to clear the arrears due to contractors from December 1, 2005. Mr. Kannambilly pointed out that the economic review of the current financial year published by the State Planning Board contained details of the reasons for the pathetic condition of roads in the State. The Government should take corrective steps based on that for upgrading roads, he said. Instead, the Government was blaming contractors and PWD engineers for the pathetic condition of roads, noted Mr. Kannambilly said. He pointed out that the State had spent Rs.1,203 crore only in the last five years for the renovation of roads in the State, which was grossly inadequate.
