Kochi: Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs M. Vijayakumar has said the newly laid synthetic track on the Maharaja’s Ground would be inaugurated by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on August 30. At a press conference here on Saturday, the Minister said the Government had sanctioned Rs.4.76 crore for laying the synthetic track. The project consultant was the Kerala State Housing Board. Besides the synthetic track, football ground and long jump pit had also been constructed. Steps for the construction of a pavilion were on. A pavilion of international standard was essential for hosting international games. It was estimated to cost Rs.60 lakh. The Minister said the track would witness national and international athletic events. In fact, the senior State athletic meet and inter-club athletic meet would be the first events to be held on the track. They were scheduled for September 7. He said a torch light procession would be taken out before the inaugural function.
