Protest against abolition of Pudukottai Lok Sabha seat
Plea to drop MOVE: BJP cadres, led by the former Union Minister, S. Thirunavukkarasar (second from left), observing a fast in Pudukottai on Saturday.
PUDUKOTTAI: Bharathiya Janata Party cadres went on a day’s fast near the old bus stand here on Saturday in protest against the abolition of the Pudukottai Lok Sabha seat in the delimitation process.
The party demanded the restoration of the seat and threatened to continue the agitation till the status quo was maintained.
Inaugurating the fast, led by the former Union Minister, S. Thirunavukkarasar, MP, State BJP president L. Ganesan said the constituency was a seat of heritage. He suspected “political conspiracy” behind the Delimitation Commission’s draft notification. The party would hold constituency-wise meeting in the district to condemn the commission’s recommendations. It would continue the fight till the status quo of the constituency was restored.
Mr. Thirunavukkarasar said the apportioning of an Assembly segment to an adjoining district could be justified only if the number of segments exceeded six. He wondered how the Pudukottai district with only six Assembly seats was erased from the parliamentary map of the country.
