HASSAN: Coordinated efforts by paediatricians and the health authorities can prevent the incidence of infectious diseases and malnutrition among children, K.N. Shankara, Director of ISRO Satellite Centre, Bangalore, has said. He was speaking after inaugurating the first national satellite- linked conference of the Indian Academy of Paediatricians at the ISRO MCF (Master Control facility) auditorium in Hassan on Saturday. Over 60 paediatricians from across the country are attending the two-day conference. “Concerted efforts would also help in taking care of social problems such as child labour and drug addiction. This can ensure a bright future for the children of tomorrow,” he said. Dr. Shankara said that at present, 47 per cent of children in the country were underweight. This pointed to the need for improving the quality of implementation and monitoring of the Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS) programme. He wanted the Indian Academy of Paediatricians to work jointly with the Health Department to build a disease-free society.
