Registration of birth, death to be compulsory

Staff Correspondent

HASSAN: Inaugurating a workshop on the importance of registration of birth and death at the Kannada Sahitya Parishat Sabhangan here on Saturday, Director for Finance and Statistics H.E. Rajasekharappa stressed the importance of the registration process, adding that systematic growth of society depended on it.

To create awareness among the people, staff from the Revenue, Statistics, Municipality/Municipal Council, Health and Education departments would be trained to educate people on the necessity of registration, he said. By 2010, registration of birth and death would become mandatory at all levels of administration, as directed by the Centre and State Governments, he said.

The workshop was jointly organised by the District Statistics Department and the Hassan Municipal Council.

Kerala tops

Mr. Rajasekharappa said Kerala stood first in the country with 100 per cent birth and death registration having been achieved, while Maharastra stood second and Tamil Nadu was in third place. Karnataka stood fourth with 87 per cent registration.

The Birth-Death Registration Act came into being in 1969 and Karnataka implemented it in 1970.

Deputy Commissioner K.H. Aswathanarayana Gowda sought the co-operation of the people with regard to registration of births and deaths.
