Raid unearths property worth Rs. 1.3 crore

DHARWAD: Dharwad Lokayukta police, during a raid, found documents pertaining to property, and vehicles and jewellery worth over Rs. 1.3 crore at the residence of an officer of land records in Dharwad on Saturday.

Dharwad Lokayukta Superintendent of Police Kashinath Talageri and his team conducted the raid. The search, which started at 6 a.m., went on till late in the evening.

Mr. Talageri gave the name of the officer as Hanumantappa Shivappa Nagaral, deputy director of land records, Dharwad, and technical assistant to the Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad.

During the raid it was found that Mr. Nagaral owned a bungalow in Dharwad (his residence) and one in Gadag, which has been rented to five families. Mr. Nagaral owned a multi-purpose vehicle and three motorcycles and had 89 acres of land in Gidda Nayakanahalli of Badami taluk in Bagalkot district, registered in his name and in the names of his four sons and wife, Mr. Talageri said.

The officer, who has completed 22 years of service, had three bank lockers in Dharwad and Badami. At the time of the raid, his wife was found wearing jewellery worth Rs. 1 lakh, the police official said.

According to Mr. Nagaral about 300 gm of gold jewellery had been kept in the bank lockers.

“However, a clear picture will emerge only after we check the bank lockers on Monday,” Mr. Talageri said.

The property and jewellery had been estimated at Rs. 1.3 crore, but the exact amount would be known only on Monday, he said.
