Burglars strike at watch showroom

THEFT ROUTE: The broken wall through which the burglars entered the showroom.

PUDUCHERRY: Burglars took away costly watches from a major showroom on Mission Street on Friday night.

The burglars managed to enter the showroom by making a manhole through the rear side and decamped with gold plated watches.

The loss was yet to be assessed, according to V. Vijayakumar, Superintendent of Police (North). The incident came to light on Saturday morning, when the owner of the showroom opened the shop. He said the incident could have happened early morning.

He said a special team from the Crime wing picked up a few fingerprints and certain other samples from the spot for analysis. The culprits had left a hammer, a pocket light and an iron rode at the crime spot. The sniffer dog was also deployed to get clues, he added.

The police suspect the involvement of an organised gang with a specialisation in gaining entry into showrooms and shopping malls after breaking the walls and grills.

He said the hole was perfectly cut, suggesting the involvement of expert criminals. Three teams have been sent to the neighbouring districts of Villupuram, Cuddalore and to Tindivanam to trace the culprits.

Fingerprints taken from the spot were also sent to the Tamil Nadu police and to the Crime Records Bureau in New Delhi. Police have also questioned the employees.
