Tata Steel turns 100

Air Deccan starts flight to mark the occasion

Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata

KOLKATA: The country’s first private sector steel unit, Tata Steel, turns hundred on August 26. Following the ideals laid down by its founder Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata way back in 1907, Tata Steel has now transformed itself into a global giant with a production capacity of almost 26 million tonnes against the one lakh tonnes it started off with.

Tata Steel Managing Director, B. Muthuraman, said in a release that the centenary of Tata Steel is linked intrinsically to the genesis and growth of an industrial India, as envisioned by the founder.

There will be cake-cutting by the MD and this will be followed by the inauguration of re-designed Founder’s Gallery at Tata Steel archives. An interactive centenary micro-site will also be launched where a viewer can share his memories and experiences about the company.

An internal function at Tata Steel Works, Jamshedpur, has been lined up, where all employees, union committee members and heads of the group companies will congregate. Air Deccan has programmed an inaugural flight to land amid the celebrations, prior to commencing commercial flights linking the hitherto unconnected Jamshedpur and Kolkata from Monday. A series of events have been planned throughout the year “so as to touch all the stakeholders who have been our partners in the 100-year journey”, Tata Steel said.
