Barre dead

PARIS: Raymond Barre, a tough-speaking former French Prime Minister and economist who refused to bow to protesters or political alliances and had an unsuccessful run for President in 1988, has died, his family said on Saturday. He was 83.

He was Prime Minister of France in 1976-81 during a 30-year political career. — AP
