Ghei in sole lead

Johor Bahru: Gaurav Ghei showed tremendous patience and determination as he hung in solidly with a round of one-under 70 to take the lead at the inaugural $300,000 Iskandar Johor Open golf tournament on Saturday.

He overcame three bogeys in the last six holes on a tough and challenging course.

Ghei is now four-under 209 for three rounds as only seven players remain under par with four others at even par for 54 holes.

India’s next best player was young rookie Gaganjeet Bhullar (70), who moved from tied 36th to tied 14th. Other Indians making the cut were Rahul Ganapathy (73), up from 36th to 33rd, Chiragh Kumar (76), staying at 62nd, and Gurbaaz Mann (78), placed at 66th, as 69 players made the cut. Nine of the 14 Indians failed to make the cut.

Kapur tied 49th

Shiv Kapur shot two double bogeys in the space of three holes and dropped from a probable top-10 position to be tied 49th at the midway stage of the KLM Open golf tournament on the European Tour.

Meanwhile, India’s other player in the field, Rahil Gangjee shot a superb two-under 68 but his first round of three-over 73 proved costly as he missed the cut by one shot.

Atwal joint 13th

Arjun Atwal made a significant climb of 55 places to be tied 13th after carding six-under par-66 in the second round at the Pete Dye Classic golf on the Nationwide Tour in USA.

Atwal, who had an even par 72 in first round, shot seven birdies and one bogey to aggregate six-under 136 for 36 holes.

Chopra crashes out

Daniel Chopra crashed out of the Barclays with one of his worst rounds of the season, an 11-over 82 that saw him finish close to the bottom of the field at the first of the four events in PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup play offs in New York on Friday. — Agencies
