Liverpool keeps winning

LONDON: Mohamed Sissoko and Andriy Voronin scored their first Premier League goals for Liverpool on Saturday in a 2-0 win at Sunderland.

Sissoko scored in the 37th minute with a powerful shot into the corner of the goal, after Jermaine Pennant headed to Voronin, who laid the ball off to Sissoko.

Voronin, who joined Liverpool in the offseason, added a second in the 87th minute in another well-worked move. Fernando Torres passed to Voronin, who shook off a defender in the box and scored into the far corner of the net.

Liverpool had two other chances to score in the first half. In the first minute, Voronin’s shot squeezed under Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon and went wide. Gordon also turned away an attempt from Fernando Torres shortly before halftime, scrambling twice to save his diving header.

Gordon then stopped Torres in the 51st minute by chesting a shot clear and caught a free kick soon after from the Spaniard. He also made a close save in the 79th minute to deny a Voronin shot from the middle of the box.

Sissoko had replaced injured Steven Gerrard in central midfield and Liverpool had two more injuries to its defensive line. Sami Hyypia broke his nose after a collision and had to be replaced after 16 minutes by Daniel Agger. In the second half, defender Jamie Carragher was taken off with a rib injury and went to the hospital for X-rays. Sunderland, which picked up four points, from its opening two matches has now lost the last two games. — Agencies
