Serving it up: Mardy Fish had a measure of Ivo Karlovic at the Pilot Pen tournament.
New Haven (U.S.): Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza fought their way to the doubles finals of their respective events at the Pilot Pen Classic here on Friday. Though it was a straight-set victory for Bhupathi and his Serbian partner Nenad Zimonjic, the going was not easy for the top seeds who managed a 7-5, 7-6(2) win to book their berth in the men’s doubles summit clash. In the final, the Indo-Serbian pair will meet Polish duo of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski. Fourth-seeded Fyrstenberg and Matkowski defeated Jordan Kerr of Australia and Jamie Murray of Britain 6-2, 6-3. Sania had even tougher a task at hand as the Indian along with Italian Mara Santangelo defeated second-seeded Kveta Peschke of Czech Republic and Rennae Stubbs of Australia 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 in the semifinals. The third-seeded Indo-Italian combination will take on top-seeded Zimbabwean Cara Black and Liezel Huber of the USA in the title clash. In the semifinals, Black and Huber got past the Czech-USA pair of Iveta Benesova and Bethanie Mattek 4-6, 6-0, 10-5. Smooth sailing
James Blake continued his assault on the New Haven field on Friday after defeating France’s Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2) at the Pilot Pen ATP hard-court event. Blake is now set for an all-American confrontation with U.S. wildcard Mardy Fish, who defeated Ivo Karlovic 7-6(3), 6-4. The results: At New Haven: Pilot Pen ATP & WTA championships: Men (semifinals): Mardy Fish bt Ivo Karlovic 7-6(3), 6-4; James Blake bt Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2). Women (semifinals): Svetlana Kuznetsova bt Elena Dementieva 4-6, 6-3, 3-0 (retd.); Agnes Szavay bt Eleni Daniilidou 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. At Forest Hills: WTA Classic (semifinals): Virginie Razzano bt Elena Vesnina 6-2, 6-0; Gisela Dulko bt Nathalie Dechy 7-6(4), 6-4.
