Kuchey posts surprise win

Avinash Nair

Jantad demolishes Khalid Ali

VASCO (Goa): India No.4 Younis Kuchey provided a silver lining even as Thailand’s threesome continued their relentless march on the fourth day of the Vascon-Manisha World under-21 snooker championship at the Bogmallo Beach resort here on Saturday.

If Kuchey’s 4-2 result over Belgium’s Davy Pauly was a surprise, the unrelenting Pramual Jantad has left nothing to chance.

Brilliant potting and aggressive approach has pitchforked Jantad to the favourite’s tag. Jantad was merciless during his 60-46, 70-44, 69-23, 64-18 victory over UAE’s Khalid Ali Mohd.

Kuchey, a third year B.Sc student from Srinagar, looked mighty pleased with his potting on Saturday. “Everything worked to a nicety today... and the win has boosted my confidence considerably,” he said.

With this win, Kuchey improved his win-loss record to 3-1 and thus ensured himself of a place in the round of 32 (knock-out) alongside Shivam Arora and Rishabh Pandya.

Shravan Mohta lost an extended match to David O’Sullivan, while Balaji Reddy finally tasted victory, though it came after a lot of sweat, over Abdul Rehman Saif Al-Shamsi.
