LIVERPOOL: Two days after an 11-year-old boy was killed in Liverpool, a gunman wounded two men outside a nightclub on Penny Lane — the street made famous by the Beatles. Friday night’s attack on the two guards of the Alma de Santiago nightclub further upset a nation already shocked by the boy’s shooting on Wednesday night, which has prompted police to re-examine the country’s already tough gun laws. One of the guards was in critical condition with stomach wounds, and the other in stable condition with leg wounds. The guards, aged 35 and 44, were not identified by name. The police said they had no idea what motivated the attack, and that no arrests had been made. Liverpool, which is holding a week of ceremonies to celebrate the Beatles, will go ahead with a planned Saturday event on Penny Lane to mark the 40 years since the Beatles released the single containing the songs “Penny Lane” and “Strawberry Fields.” But national attention was still focussed on the tragedy of Liverpool resident Rhys Jones, who was fatally shot in the neck while kicking around a soccer ball with friends Wednesday night. — AP
