JAIPUR: The Jodhpur police on Saturday arrested actor Salman Khan at the local airport on his arrival from Mumbai and produced him in court. Salman was on his way to surrender after the District and Sessions Court upheld the previous day a lower court verdict of five years imprisonment imposed on him for hunting antelopes in a Jodhpur suburb in 1998. Soon after his arrest around 1 p.m., the actor was produced before Chief Judicial Magistrate Ravi Sharma, who directed him to be jailed. Revision petition
His lawyers moved a revision petition and a bail application before the Rajasthan High Court, though the hearing, according to judicial sources, may not be possible before Wednesday. The court has a roaster system in listing of cases and Monday is said to be full. Tuesday is a court holiday on account of Raksha Bandhan. Huge crowds
Huge crowds were waiting for the actor at the airport and on the court premises. Khan appeared unfazed in his white T-shirt and jeans and characteristic dark glasses. His brother Sohail Khan and lawyer Dipesh Mehta accompanied him from Mumbai. While the actor’s lawyers claimed that Salman wanted to surrender, the police team led by Additional Superintendent of Police Sawai Singh Godara said the police would have to comply with the court orders to arrest him. He was brought in a police Gypsy from the airport to the CJM court amid tight security. Not the first time
This is not the first time Salman has been lodged in the Jodhpur Central Jail. Following an arrest warrant on December 12, 2005, he surrendered before the court on December 20. After the lower court’s order convicting him in 2006, he was jailed from April 10 to April 13. The present sentence, for five years’ jail and a penalty of Rs.25, 000, first pronounced on April 10, 2006 — and confirmed by the Sessions Court on Friday — pertains to the poaching of a gazelle on September 28 and 29, 1998 under the Mathania police station area near Jodhpur. There are other cases registered against Salman and his colleagues from the Bollywood in various courts.
