80 students will be admitted in the first year It will function on the lines of Sainik School in Bijapur
MADIKERI: The State Government has asked the Kodagu district administration to start a Sainik School at Kudige, in Somwarpet taluk in the current season, according to official sources received here on Saturday. The school, expected to be spread over 55.93 acres of land, will function on the lines of the Sainik School in Bijapur from the academic year 2007-08. In the first year, 80 students will be admitted. The Government has made provisions to accommodate 600 students on the completion of the works in different phases. The release of funds will be in a phased manner over five to six years. The Union Government has already approved a Rs. 25-crore package for the school. Of this, Rs. 4 crore will be utilised to build two classrooms, mess, offices of the principal, registrar, quarter-master, accountant and hostel for the first batch of 60 cadets (students), and accommodation for two officers and 10 staff members. In the second stage, two more classrooms , a science laboratory, generator chamber, office complex, hostel for 120 cadets and quarters for 20 staff members will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 5 crore. In the third stage, Rs. 3 crore will be spent for additional buildings, including landscaping and playgrounds. The fourth and fifth stage will involve a sum of Rs. 4 crore each. The rest of the funds will be utilised for the sixth stage, in which construction of an auditorium and completion of playgrounds is slated, and in the last phase, for a community centre and swimming pool. Sainik School authorities have invited applications from candidates for admission this year. Students born between June 2, 1996 and June 1, 1997 will be eligible. Candidates belonging to the general category, sons of sainiks and ex-servicemen, should obtain a demand draft for Rs. 350 in the name of the Principal, Sainik School, Bijapur, payable at SBI Bijapur. The DD for the SC and ST candidates is Rs. 250. Test
The applications, which will be issued between September 2 and 15, should be submitted to the Principal, Sainik School, Kudige, by September 17. Written tests for the candidates will be held in Kushalnagar, Bangalore, and Bijapur centres on September 30.
