Officers draw flak at meeting

Staff Correspondent

Madikeri: Officials of the engineering, forest, education departments and taluk panchayats in the district drew flak at the Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meeting held under the chairmanship of D.V. Sadananda Gowda, MP, to review the progress of works taken up under the MPLAD and other Central schemes here on Friday.

An official of the Karnataka Land Army Corporation was asked to furnish details of the projects taken up, completed and also those in progress in Kodagu in the past four years, within 15 days. Mr. Gowda asked the official to submit a report to the Deputy Commissioner as also mark a copy to him.

Executive officers of the Virajpet and Somwarpet taluk panchayats were pulled up for tardy progress in the implementation of housing schemes such as Indira Awas and Ashraya in the district. In spite of availability of funds and sites why was the target not achieved, Mr. Gowda asked.

Housing schemes

Madikeri MLA K.G. Bopaiah reprimanded the officers alleging that housing schemes were not taken up in five panchayats in Virajpet taluk. He sought to know why the officers concerned did not propose to the district administration to purchase private land in the absence of government land for construction of houses. Mr. Gowda asked the officials to file a report in 15 days.

Mr. Bopaiah raised objections to the filing of cases against an assistant executive engineer and personnel of CHESCOM with regard to the death of an elephant due to electrocution recently. Former MLA from Somwarpet M.P. Appachu Ranjan said the elephant menace had become a cause of concern. Mr. Gowda asked the forest officials to visit the affected areas and withdraw the cases registered against the CHESCOM officials.
