Bravery award for Sikh sailor sought

New Delhi: The Delhi Minorities Commission has recommended a bravery award for a Sikh sailor who rescued 11 Chinese crew from a sinking Panamanian vessel off the coast of Philippines.

Gurvinder Singh, 32, of Indian cargo vessel Prabhu Yuvika ordered the rescue operation after receiving emergency signals from the Unicorn Ace on March 20, 2007.

Eleven of the 19 Chinese crew on board the Panamaninan vessel, which sank about 135 km west of Luzon in the Philippines, were rescued.

“The Delhi Minorities Commission has written to Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil that captain Gurvinder Singh should be suitably honoured for his bravery,” its member Pushpinder Singh said.- PTI
