NEW DELHI: Aiming at promoting lung health, World Lung Foundation- South Asia (WLF-SA) has resolved to enhance its activities in different spheres of lung health to prioritise tobacco control. It has also formulated a two-year project to make North Campus of Delhi University a “tobacco-free” area. At its annual general body meeting on Saturday, WLF-SA president G. R. Khatri said globally about five million people die every year on account of tobacco-related causes and that “these deaths far outnumber those caused by tuberculosis and HIV combined”. “According to a survey, 31 per cent males and 7 per cent females of Delhi colleges are smokers. About 5,500 adolescents start using tobacco every day joining 40 lakh people under 15 years of age who already use tobacco regularly. This alarming data reiterates the fact that youth are becoming more susceptible to tobacco consumption. With 90 per cent of lung cancer cases caused due to tobacco consumption, it has become imperative to generate awareness about its ill-effects, especially among the youth,” said a release.
