Congress weathered many storms: Shinde

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Union Minister for Power Sushil Kumar Shinde on Saturday said the Congress had weathered many political storms in the past and it would continue to do so in the future.

The Congress was a party of the past, present and future. There was no threat to the existence of the party though some people often expressed doubts over it, Mr. Shinde said delivering the Babu Jagjivan Ram centenary memorial lecture organised by the Forum for Social Justice.

He referred to the strong roots of Congress in the context of paying tributes to Jagjivan Ram for being a true Congressman till the end. The ideology of Congress was ingrained in him though he left the party for a few years towards the end of his political career.

Mr. Shinde praised Jagjivan Ram’s contribution as Union Minister of Agriculture and Defence. Holding the portfolio of agriculture, he effectively addressed the problem of food scarcity in the country. As Defence Minister, he walked 5 km in the Siachen Glacier to boost the confidence of Indian soldiers on Indo-Pak border, he said.

Jagjivan Ram’s daughter and Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Meira Kumar said his ideals of doing away with caste system and discrimination was still to be realised. She also said people remembered him by his work 21 years after his passing away.
