NEW DELHI: Several parts of the city continued to face power cuts for the second consecutive day on Saturday. While the Delhi Power Procurement Group tried hard to procure power from Gujarat and Orissa, the city faced a shortfall of about 600 MW of power. Blackouts were reported from many areas, particularly in South West, West, East and Central Delhi. More than 350 MW of load shedding was carried out and scheduled power cuts were also reported from North Delhi. While the Capital could not procure any power from Nathpa Jhakri, the shutting down of two units of the Badarpur Power Plant added to the city’s woes. Power department officials said one unit was shut down due to the bursting of the boiler tube, while the second was shut down due to the breaking of the turbine roller. The B.T.P.S generated 215 MW of power, the Gas Turbine supplied 157 MW, I.P Power generated 145 MW, Pragati 301 MW and Rajghat supplied 117 MW. The city’s total generation stood at 936 MW at 6.40 p.m. and to meet the demand for power, it overdrew from the Northern Grid. The maximum load on Saturday was 3,408 MW. “On Friday night we had electricity for barely four hours. On Saturday again there have been power cuts for about four to six hours,” said Varinder Arora of an East Delhi RWA. Protesting against power cuts, residents in Gandhi Nagar came out on the streets. “ There was no electricity through the day, angry residents had no option, but to come out in protest,” Mr. Arora said.
