BANGALORE: Conmen are on the prowl in the city. In a span of three hours, they struck at six places in different parts of the city on Saturday and duped as many women of their gold ornaments worth over Rs. 4 lakh.

The police suspect that the notorious Ramjinagar gang from Tamil Nadu could be involved in all the six incidents and also two such cases reported from Chandra Layout and High Grounds police station limits on Friday. The gang members normally divert the attention of people and make away with their cash and valuables.

The police said that around 9.30 a.m. two men came to the Muneshwara Temple at Cleveland Town and fell at the feet of the woman priest Rathnamma (60). They told her that they needed her blessings for a new business they were starting.

They made the unsuspecting woman to remove her gold jewellery and pretended to perform puja to the ornaments. Later, they gave her some coins and asked her to put them into the hundi. As Rathnamma complied, they fled with her ornaments worth Rs. 50,000, the police said. The Fraser Town police registered a case.

In another incident, around 10 a.m. two men came to Ranjithamma’s stationery shop on Gangadhara Chetty Road and made some purchases. The duo told Ranjithamma (65) that they wanted to offer puja to her gold jewellery as that would bring them luck in their new business.

After the elderly woman removed her ornaments, the two wrapped them in a paper, diverted her attention and sped away with the ornaments worth Rs. 60,000. The Ulsoor police have registered a case.

Adopting the same trick, two men relieved Pappamma (65) of her gold jewellery worth Rs. 25,000 at Sri Rama Bhajana Mandali at Mavalli while she was offering prayers. The Kalasipalya police have registered a case.

Around 11 a.m., two men, who came on a motorcycle, approached Heera Bai (65) at 4th ‘T’ Block, Jayanagar. They introduced themselves as policemen and told her that robbers were on the prowl in the area. They made her remove her gold ornaments, worth Rs. 1 lakh, wrapped them in a paper and escaped with the jewellery. The Jayanagar police registered a case.

A few minutes later, the two struck at 2nd Block, Jayanagar, in Siddapura police station limits and duped another woman of her gold ornaments worth Rs. 75,000. The two incidents took place in a span of 30 minutes, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Alok Kumar told The Hindu.
