Central and State Government obliged to look into their problems, he says
Sushilkumar Shinde
CHENNAI: The Central and Tamil Nadu Governments are committed to fulfilling the needs of the people, Union Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said on Saturday. Speaking at the National Democratic Dalits Movement zonal conference here, he said the State and Central Governments were obliged to look into the problems of the Dalits. The Congress worked for the uplift of the Dalits. When he became Chief Minister of Maharashtra, the first thing he did was to fill the backlog of vacant posts meant for the Scheduled Castes. Several other schemes were also implemented for their welfare, he said. Recently the Union Government had taken steps to prepare Scheduled Caste youth for the IAS and IPS examinations. When some parts of the country were reeling under flood, the Government had stressed that the Dalits in the affected areas be looked after. Dalit conferences would remind the governments of their obligation to the community, he said. Inclusive society
M. Veerappa Moily, MP and Congress leader in charge of Tamil Nadu, who inaugurated the conference, said the 11th Plan focused on building an inclusive society. Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation G.K. Vasan said the cordial ties between the Tamil Nadu Government and the Union Government should be tapped to do more for the uplift of the Scheduled Castes. Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister N. Veerasamy thanked Mr. Shinde for sanctioning several power projects to the State. Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin said the Dalits should be aware of their rights, and sustain their struggle to achieve them. Polur Varadhan, MLA, who presided, said the Congress should never ignore its workers, especially the Dalits. Call for unity
He called for unity among Congress leaders. He requested the State Government to name the general hospital in Chennai after the late Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi. D. Yasodha, MLA, said such programmes as the one held on Saturday were necessary to rejuvenate party workers. District and local-level conferences were no longer being held. Apparently referring to factionalism in the party’s State unit, she said the leaders and workers remained united. But, the problem was caused by persons in the middle. TNCC president M. Krishnasswamy said the party had not ignored the Dalits.
