Held for cheating contractors

CHENNAI: The State Crime Branch CID on Friday arrested Venkatesan alias Maya Venkatesan (24) of Nagapattinam district who was wanted in connection with alleged cheating of contractors.

A car , two cellular phones and documents relating to lands purchased in the name of his brother were seized, the police said.

According to the special unit, Mr. Venkatesan had obtained money to the tune of several crores of rupees as deposits from contractors after issuing advertisement that a cement factory had been started in Tuticorin district and civil works were pending. But neither any work was allocated for them nor the money returned. Maya Venkatesan, it was alleged, had cheated 24 contractors to the tune of Rs.5.72 crore. So far, nine cases had been registered against him. The property purchased from the misappropriated amount had been identified, the CB CID said. — Special Correspondent
