Illegal sand mining rampant in State: Ramadoss

Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI: The Government would not be able to achieve its objective of generating revenue, employment and ensuring quality service if the Cable Television Corporation functioned only as a multi-system operator (MSO), Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss said here on Saturday.

Private players and the Government could co-exist in the market (to provide house connections) as this would only bring in competition. The Government could get a revenue of Rs. 400 to Rs. 500 crore a year, Dr. Ramadoss said referring to the Government’s announcement that the Corporation would function as an MSO and house connections would continue to be provided by private players. “I have already given my suggestions to the Government and even yesterday I have sent my views to the Chief Minister,” he told a press conference.

Alleging that illegal sand mining was rampant in the State, Dr. Ramadoss said if the present trend continued, rivers in the State would be left with no sand within a year.

The PMK’s Arcot MLA had already filed a case to prevent illegal sand mining in the Palar river and the High Court had constituted a commission. “We have also collected evidence from the Tamirabarani river and we will file a case before the High Court on Monday,” he said.

Dr. Ramadoss said the PMK had cordial relations with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and was only playing the role of a friendly and responsible opposition party.

The process of providing reservation for Muslims had begun in Tamil Nadu and it should be implemented without giving any room for legal hitches.

Muslims and Christians should be provided separate reservation, in proportion to their population, without affecting the existing quota regime.
