Lakra back with a bang

Kirti Patil

NEW DELHI: A.L. Lakra of Services progressed into the 57kg second round with a convincing 14-1 win against Amandeep of All India Police in the 54th National boxing championship at the Karnail Singh Stadium here on Saturday.

Lakra had taken a yearlong hiatus from competitive boxing after winning the 2005 Commonwealth gold in Glasgow. In the successive international events including the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games and Doha Asian Games, Railways’ Diwakar Prasad carried the flag in the featherweight class.

“I am back in the reckoning,” announced Lakra. He said his goal was to win the National gold and claim his place in the Indian team for the Chicago World championship.

The October 23-November 3 Chicago meet will be the first Olympic qualification tournament for the 2008 Beijing Games.

Also moving up was Chote Lal of Jharkhand, who recorded a 19-3 win against Rahul. In Prasad’s absence Chote Lal could be the sole challenger to Lakra.

Jitendra through

In the flyweight category, Asian bronze medallist Jitendra Kumar of Railways defeated Manoj of Madhya Pradesh. The referee stopped the contest in the third round.

This was the featured bout of the day, conducted soon after the long-winding opening ceremony. Kumar will meet Meghalaya’s Mohan, a 21-3 winner against Chibu of Nagaland, in the second round.

In the top half of the draw, World cadet champion Sunil Kumar of Haryana was taken to the distance by Suranjoy, representing Maharashtra.
