A close look: Managing Director of DSIIDC Manoj Parida showing the model of flats being constructed for slum dwellers to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit when she visited Bawana industrial area to inspect a sample flat.
NEW DELHI: While the Rs.1 lakh car may still be a distant dream for many, the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) is constructing houses for the poor that would cost only as much to them as the remaining subsidy of an equal amount would be borne by the Delhi Government. Giving details of the project, Managing Director of DSIIDC Manoj Parida said a total of 50,000 such houses will come up in Kanjhawala (over 100 acres), Bawana (30 acres), Samaspur (51 acres) and Neb Sarai (5 acres). While Kanjhawala and Bawana will account for 20,000 houses each, Samaspur will have 7,656 houses and Neb Sarai 700. Spread over 28 sq. m., each house will cost Rs.2 lakh to construct. It will command a subsidy of Rs.1 lakh that would be borne by the Delhi Government with the beneficiaries required to pay an equal amount. Mr. Parida said the DSIIDC is constructing these flats on behalf of the Delhi Government and the scheme would be open to slum evacuees and economically weaker sections of society. Already, he said, 3,164 dwelling units have been constructed over an area of 23.55 acres in Sector 3 of Bawana Industrial ComplexClaiming that quality was not being compromised on account of low price, Mr. Parida said the cost of the houses has been kept to the minimum through technological innovations.
