GUNTUR: The district woke up to an endless ringing of wedding bells, as over 2,000 marriages were held on Sunday. The second phase of Kalyanamastu, a joint programme of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams and Hindu Dharma Prachar Parishad too was successful with as many as 321 couples tying the nuptial knot at various places in the district. In the mass wedding programme at the TTD Kalyana Mandapam here, 14 couples got married. District Collector Mohammad Ali Rafat took part in the ceremony. Most of the weddings were held from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, during the auspicious time of ‘Tula lagnam’. The Collector handed over the mangal sutrams and a pair of new clothes to each of the newly married couples. District Revenue Officer B. Lakshmi Kantham read out the message from the Chief Minister. Guntur Municipal Corporation Deputy Mayor Tadisetty Murali, Revenue Divisional Officer S. Venkata Subbaiah were present. In another programme held at Venkateswara Swamy temple in Gorantla, 12 couples tied the nuptial knot. Joint Collector Kantilal Dande took part in the programme. Road Transport Corporation, Regional Manager G. Jaya Rao handed over free bus coupons, which have a validity period of six months, to the newly married couples.
