Domestic violence: Judge warns officials

TUMKUR: K.L. Manjunath, Judge, Karnataka High Court, said here on Sunday that the Union and State governments had failed to implement the Domestic Violence Prevention Act 2005. The courts would be constrained to order action against the officials concerned for failing in their duties in this regard.

Inaugurating a workshop on the Act, organised by Tumkur Zilla Panchayat, Mr. Manjunath said: “I can safely claim that the law is only made and not implemented. Victim’s neighbours, local area designated protection officers and security agencies and all public service providers will be held responsible for their failure to effectively implement the law.” He warned the officials concerned that the court would punish them for failing to implement the Act.

The judge said: “As far as possible, only women should be posted as protection officers to facilitate prompt action in all cases of domestic violence. He said crime rate against women and children was very high in western society.

The judge appreciated the ‘body politic’ in India for making several laws guaranteeing safety and security to the women and children.

S. Krishna Bhat, principal and district sessions judge, welcomed the gathering.

S.R. Umashankar, Deputy Commissioner, presided over the programme. H.A. Anantaramu, Superintendent of Police; Manojkumar Meena, Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, and J. Nagaraj, president of the Tumkur Bar Association, spoke.
