Make concerted efforts to end bonded labour: Collector

Kakinada: East Godavari Collector M. Subrahmanyam has called for concerted effort by the police, revenue, labour and education departments to end the bonded labour system that is prevalent in one form or the other.

Reviewing the situation at a meeting of officials at the Collectorate on Saturday, the Collector said bonded labour system was prevailing in poultry farms, brick industry, quarrying and hotels and wanted officials to regularly monitor the situation for initiating remedial measures.

Under the latest GO MS No: 55 issued on July 19, he said the eradication of bonded labour and child labour would hereafter be supervised by the Zilla Parishad. Besides, it also looks after the rehabilitation of those freed from bonded labour.

Mandal Development Officers would identify the child the bonded labour and initiate steps for their rehabilitation.

The Collector said that Zilla Parishad would take steps for creating awareness among people about prevention of SC and ST atrocities through posters, cinema slides and workshops.

In addition, the Zilla Parishad would look after the admission process in social welfare hostels and their supervision, supplying of school uniforms, books and other material.

He said 723 persons were freed from bonded labour in the district till now from 1976.

Vigilance meet

Earlier, addressing the vigilance and monitoring committee meeting on the prevention SC and ST atrocities, the Collector said that 73 cases were registered till July-end this year of which 36 cases were found out to be falses.

In the remaining 37 cases, he said, eight affected people were paid a compensation of Rs.2.56 lakhs.
