dated August 27, 1957: Ronald Knox dead

Mr. Ronald Knox, whose translation of the Bible has become famous throughout the English-speaking world, died on August 25 at Wells, Somerset. He was 69. Son of a former Bishop of Manchester and himself a Church of England clergyman before becoming a Roman Catholic in 1917, Ronald Knox began work on a new translation into English of the Latin version of the Bible prepared by St. Jerome 1,800 years ago. The first part of the translation (The New Testament), now widely used, appeared in 1943, and the completed Bible was issued in 1955.
