The Government has come up with several measures to resolve the shortage of doctors in government health-care institutions. One of the important decisions is to make rural service of at least one year compulsory for all MBBS/PG (Medicine) students in government medical colleges. Also, the Government has appointed over 750 doctors on contract basis through the National Rural Health Mission, by offering them attractive salaries and difficult rural area allowances. Are these steps enough to make health care more accessible to people? What more needs to be done to improve public health and to ensure that the service of specialists is accessible to the rural population?
