NEW DELHI: Ahead of the debate in Parliament on the India-U.S. civilian nuclear agreement, senior Congress leaders will meet the leaders of the CPI(M) and the CPI here on Monday in an attempt to understand each other’s point of view. External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister A.K. Antony and Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, will form the Congress group that will meet CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat and his CPI counterpart A.B. Bardhan, who are likely to be accompanied by senior party leaders. Speaking to The Hindu, CPI leader and Rajya Sabha member D. Raja, who met Mr. Mukherjee on Sunday, said the meeting was expected to be held on Monday evening. The subject came up when Mr. Raja called on Mr. Mukherjee to discuss the details of the upcoming India-Vietnam Friendship Festival in September. The meeting between the Congress and leaders of the Left parties is the outcome of a discussion on the subject at the meeting of the Congress Core Group on Saturday in which Ms. Gandhi was present. The Congress is yet to decide on the Left parties’ demand to put on hold the nuclear deal till the issue is debated and their concerns were addressed. The Left parties have sought a mechanism to look threadbare into the U.S. Hyde Act.
